Why Another Tracking App?

Accuracy - While GPS receivers, including those found in smartphones, are capable of recording locations every second, they come with inherent and unavoidable inaccuracies. These inaccuracies may be minor in the context of high-speed travel, such as by automobile or airplane, yet they can significantly affect data during human-powered activities like:

 <li>Walking</li>
 <li>Running</li>
 <li>Cycling</li>
</ul>
This issue is particularly pronounced in conditions where GPS signals may be obstructed or absorbed, such as:
<ul>
 <li>Hills and mountains</li>
 <li>Dense tree cover</li>
 <li>Rain and cloudy weather</li>
</ul>

Simplicity - Many tracking applications offer a plethora of features that might be advantageous to certain users; however, this can complicate the interface and necessitate a search for straightforward functionalities. There have been instances where data was lost due to accidental selection on an overly intricate screen.

HikeTracker has been developed with a focus on accuracy and simplicity, specifically geared towards enhancing the experience of hiking in the scenic Pacific Northwest. Nevertheless, it is equally effective for more leisurely activities such as walking and biking around urban areas. The app employs various methods to combine and refine raw GPS data, thereby filtering out inaccuracies while retaining sufficient points for a smooth and precise representation of the user’s route and distance measurements.
